Great British Food Christmas 2024

“It has been an absolute privilege to judge the Great British Food Awards this year, with some incredibly strong submissions in the meat, poultry and beverage categories. Once again, the Awards have made us reflect on the skill, knowledge and tenacity of some of our artisan food and drink heroes, and their absolute dedication to bringing us fantastic new products. Whether it’s a field, farm or vineyard, the ability to not only work with, but make the most of our challenging weather, whilst presenting beautiful products, is a true testament to our makers. It’s extremely reassuring that when many British products are pitched against their European equivalent these days, you will not be disappointed. We tasted the most delicious home-produced halloumi, porchetta, whisky barrel-aged balsamic, vibrant and uplifting matcha tea and a wonderful tiramisu ice cream. And it’s fair to say that Lannock Farm’s botanical aperitif would challenge any alcoholic one. We enjoyed some homegrown classics, too. Products that have flourished on local resources, with valuable time and energy dedicated to growing and farming. The organic bronze turkey from Frenchbeer Farm, moreish crackling of the Packington Free Range Pork Loin, rich mottled Bara Brith and gluten-free brownies and innovative, smoky coal oil from Home by Simon Rogan range, all really stood out. But when a top-quality, vibrant and sparkling English rosé wine delivers against the great champagne houses, you can’t help admiring how strong and confident Great British food and drink has become. This sector is where artisans are showing grit, knowledge and dedication to quality.
